After 2 years of preparation, Cabox Aspiring Geopark launched its animated “rock” video ‘Our World In Motion’ on September 16 at Corner Brook’s Rotary Arts Center. The 12.5 minute video follows the adventures of 5 local school kids as they journey through Cabox Geopark and discover how their lives and environment are characterized by motion. Funded by the Canadian Geological Foundation (CGF), Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and provincial department of Industry, Energy and Technology (IET), the video features paintings by artists Lori Deeley and Joanne Cole and animation by Bethany Caldwell. Students from St. Peter’s Academy in Benoit’s Cove voiced the characters and sang the songs, along with students from Jakeman All Grade School in Trout River.
Coinciding with the launch of the video was an exhibit of Lori and Joanne’s painting in the adjoining Tina Dolter Gallery. Entitled Foundations, Geology of the Bay of Islands and Lower Humber Valley, the collection of Lori’s watercolor landscapes and Joanne’s acrylic details presents a comprehensive view of the diverse geology of the Geopark region, which played a supporting role in the development of the scientific theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s.
Prior to the launch of the video, Lori and Joanne gave presentations on their approach to painting and interpretation of the scenes, provided as photos by Cabox Chairperson Paul Wylezol, who has spent many years exploring the region on behalf of the International Appalachian Trail Newfoundland and Labrador (IATNL).
Paul followed Lori and Joanne with a presentation on Cabox Aspiring Geopark and the UNESCO Global Geopark Network.
Once the stage was set, Paul introduced Our World In Motion to the delight of students and teachers and their families and friends.
The kids characters were voiced by St. Peter’s Academy students Avarie Hutchings, Avery Stewart, Jesse Kennedy, Leah Young and Owen Stewart. The old man character was voiced by Tyler Christopher.
The songs Land In Motion (St. Elmos Fire (Man In Motion) by John Parr) and Cabox Is A Place On Earth (Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle) were sang by students at St. Peter’s Academy in Benoit’s Cove. The song Move Like Nature (Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5) was sang by students of Jakeman All Grade School in Trout River.
Our World In Motion was written and directed by Paul Wylezol.
