On June 14, 2021, Cabox Aspiring Geopark received news that it had been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Canadian Geological Foundation’s Jérôme H. Remick III Endowment Trust Fund to produce an animated video and accompanying rock kit to help educate local school children about the geological heritage of Western Newfoundland, and in particular Cabox Aspiring Geopark.
The video will star child characters Bobby and Harry, based loosely on real-life geologists Robert Stevens and Harold “Hank” Williams who in the 1960s, 70s and 80s helped decipher the geological history and composition of the Humber Arm Allochthon.
Bobby and Harry and their young friends will bring school kids on an adventure-filled tour of Cabox Aspiring Geopark’s natural and cultural heritage, while showing them various rock types and formations found within the region.
Accompanying the video will be a Bobby & Harry themed rock kit that will be made available to local schools to use in their geography and earth science courses.
Future plans also include the installation of indoor and outdoor monitors featuring the animated video and other educational content at key Geopark information centers, attractions and geosites.
It is hoped that this first animated Bobby & Harry Rock Video will kick off an entire series focused on The Adventures of Bobby & Harry and their diverse group of friends as they explore the natural and cultural heritage of Cabox Geopark and Newfoundland and Labrador.
